The Graveyard Gang

Canmore Cemetery

Walking through and photographing a cemetery is always a rewarding use of one’s time.  Those who came before us deserve to be remembered and celebrated! ~ Wendy Schultz

On a beautiful spring day here in Alberta, “The Graveyard Gang” headed off to Canmore to recording another cemetery. Canmore has also been on the list. We started off early before the day got to warm and to beat some of the traffic heading off to Banff. I was road-tripping with Dorothy and we made it to Deadman’s Flats early so we decided we needed breakfast, it was good and it kept us full and happy while we were busy photographing the cemetery.

There was 7 of us busily heading up and down the rows, making sure we get all the headstones photographed. And we all wandered through the “Old Cemetery”, it always amazes me how quickly mother nature will reclaim her land. There has been a bit of maintains done in the old part but time has taken its toll. However, the main cemetery is beautifully maintain and well looked after.

Old Cemetery

Canmore Historic Cemetery started in 1898, after a hotel fire that claimed a young child, which was the first person buried in the Old Canmore Cemetery. There are approximately 199 graves among the overgrowth of beary berries, juniper, pine, spruce and aspens as well as of the native wildflowers. It amazes me how quick mother nature will take back her ground. There some monuments that are maintained and a walkway created among the graves which made for a lovely little walk through. Watching the ground squirrels run around and listening to the birds was very peaceful.
