Learning, Trying & Creating

Day 10

Today was about learning, trying and creating. I have been working on a Minimalism online workshop with Cherry Larcombe and today’s topic was Minimalism in Still Life. She shared many of her images as well as how she worked with them in Photoshop. I have forgotten how powerful PS can be as well as how simple some of the technics really are. I look forward to reviewing this video in the next few days and pick up some of the things I didn’t catch on the first round.

Secondly today, I have watch part of Paul Sanders online seminar. What an interesting man, and down to earth as well. His struggles with photography and finding your style and the fact your style changes as you do. This is a concept I have been struggling with and have been trying to find my way through at times. Learning that play is much more fun and creative then producing the same old stuff.

And then Mali, I can’t leave Mali out! Mali Davis is a wonderful creative man. The way he explores the world amazes me every time I check out his latest video, photos or his podcast that makes me smile every time. I still have some watching to do on this video but the locations seem to be right up his alley, the trees are amazing!!

Today being a creating day, I decided to try out one of the PS Technics from Cherry to see what I could do. There are others that I will try out soon but thought this would be a good start.

The image was taken while in Scotland in September 2025, in the Cathedral in Inverness. The stone cravings that were at the base of one of the pillars intrigued me greatly and the light filtering in just made it even better. This PS technic I found bought out so much more detail in the engraving that I was focused on. I find that this figure seems so very lonely.

Paul talked of Building a Style and Consist Change. I feel that my photography is in a stage of consist change. I don’t even want it to be boring, if it becomes boring I don’t think would pick up a camera. I love colour and I love black & white!! The world is filled with colour but sometimes you need to slow it down and just play and create and see what you get. It doesn’t matter to me if everyone likes it, I have created it for me and if you like it thats ok too.

While I was sitting and listening to the first part of Paul’s talk, my mind was racing . . . new photographers to look up, new ideas to think about, new concepts to digest!! And of course as usually a thought popped into my brain and that had to go and try.

These flowers may not be your “cup of tea” but l liked what I got and that is what matters to me!!
