Downy

Peace Estate Park, early April 2025

The Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens) is a small bird found across North America, including Canada. It has black-and-white plumage, with a distinctive black crown, white stripe, and speckled underside. Males have a red patch on their heads. Predominantly insectivorous, they forage for larvae and beetles in tree bark, but also eat seeds and berries. Their foraging involves rapid pecking to find food. Known for quick drumming sounds used for communication and territory establishment, they nest in decayed wood or dead trees, creating cavities for their young. These adaptable birds inhabit forests, orchards, and suburban areas. Observing them can enhance backyard biodiversity, especially at feeders in winter.
