Everyone Needs a Little History
Scotland History Lesson ~ Inverness, Scotland
Market Brae Steps
The steps served a purpose, as the access to the Upper and Lower parts of the city of Inverness. In the days gone by, the Market Brae Steps were to access Barnhill Cattle Market which was established in 1811. The Upper parts of the city in 1811, were an agriculture community known as Barnhill. As the city grown, Barnhill Cattle Market was moved to a more suitable area and the Market Brae steps became less important however they are still used to this day to move between the upper and lower parts of the city.
The steps consist of 5 sets of 10 to 15 steps. And lugging a suitcase and camera bag, it was a long way up. But, it was worth it! Once you made it to the top, it is a community of old terrace houses, trees and it is quiet.
