Newhaven
To the west of Leith, Newhaven had a traditional harbour and fish market. Around 1835, an average of 20 million oysters per year were exported from Newhaven alone and 1.7 million sold for consumption in Edinburgh.
Newhaven is a coastal district on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, about 2.5 kilometres north-west of Edinburgh city centre. Historically a distinct village and fishing community, it has been shaped by maritime industry, trade, and gradual urban integration into the wider city of Edinburgh.
