Shortest Day

Saturday, December 21st, 2024

“At the darkest time of year, Lord Yule laid down his beard of snow and cloak of frost and ice to illuminate the gloom.” ― Stewart Stafford

The shortest day of the year marks a poignant moment in the seasonal cycle, where daylight dwindles to its briefest span. It typically occurs around December 21st, signalling the winter solstice. During this time, nature undergoes a profound transformation. The landscape is often blanketed in snow, a stark contrast against the muted skies, and the air carries a crispness that invigorates.

As the sun rises late and sets early, the fleeting hours of light invite reflection and introspection. Many find solace in this time, embracing the tranquility that accompanies the long nights. It is an opportunity to gather with loved ones, share warmth, and create memories that outshine the darkness outside. The quiet beauty of winter reminds us of the cycles of life and the promise of renewal, as from this point onward, days will gradually lengthen, leading us toward the light of spring.

Sunrise at 8:38am and Sunset is 4:32pm; 7hrs 54mins of Daylight

Morning Moon, just before sunrise on the shortest day of the year.

I did a little something for my birds. As of sunset, they haven’t found it yet but I promise once they do I will share the photos!! Hopefully, the squirrels don’t find the peanut butter pinecone and carry it away. They are bold squirrels in my neighbourhood!!
