THE SUITOR HOUSE
Robert Suitor was born of Irish parents in Beauce County, Quebec in 1858 and came to Calgary in 1902. He served as an Alderman from 1906 to 1908. Suitor completed this brick residence in 1907 to advertise his skill as a carpenter, building contractor and developer. Although the community of Inglewood was primarily working class, a number of other prominent individuals lived here, including A.E. Cross, James Walker - after whose estate the area is now known - and John Stewart. The extensive holdings of these men was an important factor in the 1883 decision of the CPR to locate on the west side of Elbow River. The Suitor House is representative of the Queen Ann style and features a turret, multiple gables and a wrap-around verandah. The house was restored in 1979, at which time an addition was made to the north elevation.
