A Train Ride

Below is a poem or thoughts, I wrote on the train ride back down from Inverness to Edinburgh in 2024. As the scenes flashed by I quickly wrote what I thought, felt or simple admired. It was an experience just to sit and enjoy the ride, no worries about anything in the moment and I felt I could just simple write.

A Train Ride

The music plays and the trees flash by.

Seeing things I don’t see at home . . . Bunnies, sheep, jackdaws, cattle and little birds who fly by so quickly.

Old buildings that would delight any creative and drive them mad because the train doesn’t stop.

Stone walls that are crumbling, surrounding beautiful deep green fields.

We flash through the mist and out the other side to the sunshine.

The landscape changes from flat farmlands to mountains into tiny villages soon to hit the big city of Edinburgh.

My time in Scotland has gone by so quickly, half in a dream state and in awe of the beauty and quiet oldness of the lands.

Men have walked here since the beginning of time, carved this land, left their footprints and mine are among them now.

My heart will always be here, but my heart is Canadian too, my prairies and mountains call me home.

The familiar sights, sounds, the peace of loved ones. The ones who are here and in the now and the ones who flit through my memories. Leaving small sounds and touches that are just barely felt and heard.

One day again, I will take a train ride with the music playing and the trees flashing by.
