GRASSLANDS ADVENTURE

GRASSLANDS  - May 26

It’s an Owly Kind a Day!!

We barely made it in to the park this morning and we found Burrowing Owls right off the bat!!  The are the cutest things you have ever seen.  But they do have a Grumpy Ole Man look to them!!

BURROWING OWLS

Burrowing Owls, also known as ground owls, were once a common site throughout the prairies.  These charismatic, little raptors make their homes in the burrows dug from gophers, prairie dogs, badgers, coyotes and foxes.

Historically, the owls have steadily declined not only due to the usual habitat destruction, but because of incidental killings from poison programs aimed at insects and pests.

Today, several national recovery actions are in place to protect the species, but one program unique to the park is supplemental feeding programs, where biologists feed mice to the owls.

Early results are showing an increase in the owl’s productive success. ~ Experience Grasslands National Park/Visitors Guide

The Burrowing Owls are a small owl that can be extremely hard to spot because they are basically the same color of the surrounding area.  And unless they move or fly, you may never see them!!

But my partner in crime & I, were very very lucky to be able to photography a couple of Burrowing owls that were quite close to the road.
