In Major John Stewart’s optimistic vision, Calgary would rise around his home here by the Bow River. Born in Ottawa in 1854, the Major commanded a cavalry escort for the opening of Parliament in1873 and 1874. In the 1880’s he bought a ranch near Pincher Creek, raised the Rocky Mountain Rangers during the Northwest Rebellion and acquired land here east of Elbow for a new western community. As it did elsewhere, the Canadian Pacific Railway avoided building on speculator’s land and located its station further west in 1883. Stewart’s own Gothic Cottage home, designed by a Winnipeg architect, rose on this site in 1884. It is one of the oldest frame building in Alberta.
