Edinburgh Birds

Eurasian Blue Tit

One of the first little birds that we found during a nature walk along the River Leith down in Dean Village. It wasn’t quite daylight yet when we started this walk so this little guy wasn’t the easiest to see but I could him. I only saw him once bobbing around this tree and I quickly got a few shots off and the then he was gone. But what beautifully coloured bird, reminded me very much of a Chickadee in the mannerisms.

The Eurasian blue tit is a small bird with bright blue and yellow feathers, found in Europe and parts of Asia. It measures 12-14 cm long with a wingspan of 20-22 cm, featuring a blue cap, yellow belly, and white cheeks. Common in woodlands and gardens, they are attracted to seed feeders. They eat insects, seeds, and berries, helping control pests. Known for being social, they gather in small flocks outside the breeding season and communicate through various sounds. They nest in tree holes or birdhouses, laying 6 to 12 eggs that the female incubates for about two weeks. Their colorful looks and active nature make them favorites for birdwatchers and photographers, benefiting the environment.

Edinburgh Birding and Nature Tours - Matt was great, very knowledgable and wonderful person to hang out with for the day in search of birds and other wildlife. I highly recommend his tours.
